Good evening all,
Picture the scene…….I’m walking up the 5th fairway on the Ailsa Championship course at Trump Turnberry. Sun is shining, you’d be lucky if there’s any sort of breeze & I’m happily chatting to my golfer for the day, explaining how good we’ve had it recently, weather wise etc. The conversation soon turns to ”which courses are you playing on your trip?” & the gentlemen rattles off a familiar list that’s been set up for him & his playing partners. ”So we had Royal Troon & Old Prestwick yesterday, weather was great. We’re here today obviously, tomorrow we’re on the other course here (King Robert the Bruce) & then we head East. Kingsbarns, St Andrews Old & New, the Castle Course & we then finish at Carnoustie”. He then asks where I play my golf, & I start explaining about the Season Ticket that’s on offer from the local council in the area. Suddenly I have a light bulb moment, but hang fire, we’ll get to that!
For those of you not familiar, the Season Ticket I refer to is available through South Ayrshire Council. There are a couple of packages on offer at different prices (I’ll link the website below), but the short version is, you get a number of different courses to play (up to 8) for a very respectable annual fee.
So, this light bulb moment……I can’t imagine there is a lot of places where there are that many golf courses in such a small area. We’ve got the world famous courses (I walk one everyday), but we also have a number of others. A mixture of public & private courses which don’t cost half the green fees demanded of the more prestigious, but do offer a substantial enough challenge & most importantly of all, plenty of enjoyment.
So I have decided to write about said courses, give a brief description of each of them, share my own experiences (good & bad) when playing them & hopefully help boost their profile. Ayrshire is a golfing mecca. You could visit here a number of times & still go home having missed 18 holes somewhere along the line.
Each week, I will focus on one individual course, covering all the important points that need detailing.
This, my friends, is the Affordable Golf Ayrshire Blog.
Thank you for your time,
Marc.
